you can see that on hi-def doppler radar. a big heatup is on the way. we'll talk about that in a minute. >> "friday light" this morning. overnight roadwork. much more traffic and weather together every 10 minutes coming up. >> thank you. some developing news now out of north san jose. the search is on for the suspect behind the city's 37th homicide of the year. officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound in the 1700 block of rogers avenue around 2:00 this morning. the victim died at the scene. investigators have not identified the suspect or a motive. the identity of the man killed is being withheld. the so-called san jose serial arsonist continues his dumpster burning path for a second day in a row. once again a trash bin in the same area near delna manor lane were set on fire. flames were put out before crews arrived. firefighters say these small

fires could easily get out of control. this is the tenth fire in the past three weeks. a two-alarm house fire in the hills above downtown mill valley start an hour and a half ago at 175 bolsa avenue. one person in the house when the fire started was able to get out safely. no word on the cause. lower tax rates, increase growth. >> now you're jack kennedy. >> joe biden and paul ryan locking horns in the only vice- presidential debate of 2010 -- 2012, rather. the vice president's revival of lloyd bentsen's 1988 barb, here's the results of a poll on who came out on top with randall pinkston. >> i will be very specific. >> reporter: vice president joe biden wasted no time challenging congressman paul ryan's take on foreign policy. >> with all due respect, that's a bunch mularkey. >> and why is that so? >> not a single thing he said

is accurate. >> reporter: the vice president and ryan clashed over the economy, taxes and medicare with the democrat often on the attack. >> and they're holding hostage the middle class tax cut. it's about time they take some responsibility. >> reporter: but ryan fired back. he slammed the obama administration's economic record. >> this is not what a real recovery looks like. we need real reforms for a real recovery and that's exactly what mitt romney and i are proposing. >> reporter: after several heated exchanges ryan insinuated that president obama's performance last week was motivating the vice president's -- >> i know you're under a lot of duress for making up for a loss round. >> reporter: who won? it depends who you ask. polls are mixed. in a cbs news poll of uncommitted voters, 50% thought the vice president run, 31% sided for ryan and 19% called it a tie. 56% thought biden would be an effective president if

necessary compared with 49% for ryan. not surprisingly, both sides claimed victory. mitt romney's campaign said biden seemed off balance and strange. the president's team said the debate exposed the risks of electing a romney/ryan ticket. the next presidential debate is tuesday. randall pinkston, cbs news, danville, kentucky. as for the men at the top of the ticket, president obama will remain in washington today to prepare for his next debate next week and mitt romney will be campaigning in the battleground states of ohio and virginia friday. so who do you think won the debate? tell us why, too. you can comment on facebook or twitter, or email us at mornings@cbs5.com. meanwhile, ryan's making some news for something other than the debate. "time" magazine has released photos of the wisconsin congressman working out. they are actually outtakes of a photo shoot from last year. some critics accuse the editors of the magazine of trying to make ryan look young and trivial. ryan has said he began a

commitment to fitness when he was 16 years old after he found his father dead of a heart attack. for more political coverage, just check our exclusive presidential forum on cbssf.com. every day the candidates weigh in on a different issue. 4:34. our second check official live weather now. let's kick it over to lawrence. we have a big weekend ahead. >> we do. >> yes, we do. half moon bay pumpkin festival nice weather. we'll see clouds there but looks like the rain is starting to wind down now. still leftover showers in the south bay mountains. you can see that on our high- def doppler radar. drizzle approaching the bay and the coastline so the roads are still a little slick outside. this area of low pressure finally spinning its way out of town heading to southern california but still getting some of that wraparound moisture working into the bay area. this will be the last day of it and then it moves out. looks like high pressure will move into the bay area so the temperature will be warming up.

right now 50s across the board. by the afternoon still a cool day today highs mainly just in the 60s. but over the weekend maybe some 70s and 80s. maybe next week some 90s. we'll talk more about that in a moment. right now let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> it may be slick in spots coming into san francisco this morning the pavement was wet from last night an overnight rain so watch out for that. otherwise, the bay bridge is moving fine "friday light" traffic so far on the upper deck. you may find some rolling closures and delays. they are street sweeping in the area but looks good now, no delay approaching the pay gates. elsewhere, to our maps and more roadwork this time in the southbound lanes of 101 on the span of the golden gate bridge. maybe we noticed it might be a little wet on the pavement there heading into san francisco towards doyle drive, as well. more overnight roadwork on the san mateo and dumbarton bridge. sensors are picking up slowing on both 92 and 84. both scheduled to wrap up in the next 25 minutes but again

that's westbound 84 and westbound 92 various lanes blocked. so caltrans crews still out there very hard at work and back outside one of our live "timesaver traffic" cameras everything looks great up the nimitz, no delay on the freeways and everything is cruising towards downtown. coming up a check of mass transit and in the meantime, back to you in the studio. >> thank you. some tears of you. >> and some tears of sadness last night. the giants pulled off a miracle comeback taking three in a row from the reds in cincinnati. they move on to the nlcs. then it was the as turn at home last night against the tigers. sellout crowd filled the coliseum last night but the star in this game was on the mound really for the tigers. the reigning cy young award winner justin verlander pitched a complete game shutout. he was huge. as only four hits, lost to the tigers 6-0 in their finale but what a season it was. >> i think we surprised a lot

of people outside of this clubhouse. obviously we would have liked to have continued on. the goal it is to make it all the way get that ring on your finger and have the parade. but it comes to a end for us. difficult to swallow. >> the tigers advance to the alcs against either the orioles or the yankees who battle it out in their game 5 later tonight. how about the giants? they became the first time in big league history to win three straight on the road it close out a five-game series. it was a nail biter. posey with a big grand slam to make it 6-0 in the fifth. giants beat the reds 6-4. they will start the nlcs sunday on the road in washington or at home against st. louis. those two teams have at it tonight in their game 5, as well. people in a vallejo neighborhood are back home this morning after explosives were

found in the area. a bomb squad dead nature small bombs after evacuating a few blocks around georgia street. one person was taken into custody after the devices were found in his home. the suspect's own roommates called vallejo police. neighbors say they were always suspicious. >> you know, the guy, you know, i smell chemicals at night i would tell the police officers, he would just be making all kinds of noise at all times of night. you know? it would be so loud. shake my house. >> the suspect is facing felony charges for making and detonating bombs. the suspect in a vallejo double murder is due in a solano county courtroom this afternoon. 65-year-old martin hohinager is set to be arraigned in connection with the shooting death of two neighbors. it stemmed from an -- from an argument over politics. contra costa supervisors will vote on a contract for

prosecutors. it was revised to ease the impact of paycuts. the contract includes a new retirement tier for future employees. federal judges have given the state's corrections department until january to explain how they will reduce the state's inmate population. last year the supreme court ruled 33,000 inmates needed to be removed from the california prison system. the deadline to get those numbers down is next june. bay area solar company solyndra may not get the reorganization it proposed. attorneys with the irs and the department of energy asked a bankruptcy judge to reject the plan. the irs says the plan's main purpose is tax avoidance. there is a hearing now on this issue set for next week. quite the spectacle today in los angeles as the space shuttle endeavour is moved through city streets to its retirement home. endeavour is being transferred from los angeles international airport to the california science center at exposition

park. the 170,000-pound spacecraft will be on display there for museum visitors eventually . this is a live picture of from the streets of l.a. there you can see the shuttle is moving at 2 miles per hour. four computer controlled transporters will negotiate the shuttle along the 12-mile route where in some cases it will be inches away from buildings. >> in some places the wing tips will extend beyond the boundaries of the streets over the sidewalks. >> reporter: what do you do then? >> just move very carefully and slowly. we tell people to open their windows as the wing comes by. [ laughter ] >> can you imagine? trees and other obstacles had to be removed to accommodate the unusually wide load. the shuttle will travel at speeds up to 2 miles an hour as we said in the two-day trip that began late last night. can you imagine being on that crew it help move it along the streets? >> neat. >> i think they took out like hundreds of trees too. that's tough. >> they did. >> but hey, it's the shuttle.

we have a problem. hope that tasty treat inside the jar was worth it. jar got stuck on a raccoon's head as he got close to power lines. his human neighbors in the detroit suburb came out and watched those sharp claws from a distance. they got a little video. finally after a dangerous all nighter with the jar on his head it came down close enough and calm enough for someone to pop the jar from his head. >> i would imagine you have to be careful because they're kind of mean. >> i would think he would be happy to pull that sucker off and i think he would have just taken off. >> i came out my door today there's a raccoon staring at me. i said, hello, how are you, mr. raccoon?

then he walked up to me and stood on his legs like that. >> he didn't hiss at you? >> yes, they are tough. don't police with them. around the bay area, looks like we have -- >> don't mess with them. around the bay area, looks like we have scattered showers drizzle in the south bay mountains and the coast. high-def doppler radar showing you the moisture moving by. this will be the last of it. it will scoot eastward. a good weekend but a cloudy start and temperatures staying very cool around the bay area even though we are going to start to see some clearing as we head in toward the end of the day anyway. gradual warming throughout the weekend. looks like high pressure finally going to build in as the low kicks eastward making for stormy weather in the central part of the country but we're finally going to see things clear out and more nice weather is coming our way but starting out today a lot of clouds early on drizzle along the coastline and we could see some more of that as we head throughout the morning hours and then by the afternoon looks like things finally begin to break up a bit and then the weather should improve throughout the weekend, although we're not going to be

entirely cloud-free. we'll have low clouds and fog in the morning. usually in the 80s in the interior valleys, 60s this afternoon. a lot of 60s in the east bay valleys, 70 in places like brentwood and antioch. inside the bay, 62 san francisco, 65 petaluma. next couple of days, we'll slowly warm up. more sunshine by sunday. weak system drops in monday that will hold the temperatures down but then looks like we heat up maybe some mid-90s toward the middle of next week. >> just when you thought summer was over it makes a comeback. innings that, lawrence. let's go towards the nimitz. 880 and as you can see, everything is moving fine near the oakland coliseum. all the way towards downtown. yeah, free and clear. so overall on this friday morning, it is not too bad. elsewhere, towards the east bay, eastbound and westbound 580 still looks okay through the altamont pass. this is usually one of the our first spots to slow down but obviously, not a single yellow

sensor on there showing speeds below 40 miles per hour. so that's a good sign that this commute is off to a nice start all the way towards the dublin interchange and tassajara. elsewhere, highway 4 is our next spot to slow down. so far it looks okay. i'm not seeing major roadwork projects across the stretch either. often times they shut down the full freeway at loveridge. not the case this morning. elsewhere, here's a live look at the golden gate bridge. traffic is flowing okay across the span. you will find some roadwork in lanes on southbound 101 on the approach towards doyle drive. and the toll plaza and also some roadwork in lanes going against the commute northbound 101 from the waldo tunnel towards sir francis drake. for the most part south bay free and clear this morning on the 101, the guadalupe parkway and 280 through downtown san jose. coming up we'll give you a check of mass transit. we have traffic and weather together every 10 minutes. back to you guys. >> thank you. a week of nobel prize winner announcements wrapped up this morning with the surprise winner of the peace prize.

the winner the european union. u received the award for the advancement of peace, reconciliation, democracy and human rights in europe. a student protest turned hostile today in santiago, chile. thousands of students held a demonstration clashing with police, they contend the government failed to deliver an adequate response to their demands for education reform. security is tight on indonesia's resort island of bali as survives and victims' families mark 10 years since two deadly nightclub bombings. the explosions killed 202 people in 2002. more than 2,000 police officers and military personnel have been deployed to guard today's memorial services. that's because the government detected some possible terrorist activity. 4:47. 14 people have died from the rare meningitis outbreak. at least 170 more are sick. the outbreak is linked to a

tainted steroid shot made by a massachusetts company. it was given to 14,000 people to treat back pain. the company can face criminal charges. the new iphone knows where you are at all times. apple has quite thely started tracking users -- quietly started tracking users and tell advertisers what you want to know. we'll tell you how to opt out. larry magid says it's not an intuitive process or in the privacy settings like you might thing. >> i do blame them of i think that if you're going to give people the ability to control their privacy you should make it obvious how they do it and by hiding it and by making it obscure it sort of is privacy denied. >> here's how. to turn off ad tracker go to general, then to about, scroll past all the technical data, click on advertising, then you can turn on limit ad tracking. >> got it.

it is almost 4:49. we are going to get earnings reports today from a couple of major american banks. the reports will come from wells fargo, jpmorgan chase, who is expected to face tough questions about its $6 billion trading loss when it announces its 3rd quarter earnings. "new york times" says federal investigators are using taped phone conversations now to build a criminal case against the bank. tully's coffee plans to close nine stores sunday after the parent company went bankrupt. the company has more than $7.5 million in debt. tully's will keep 48 other stores open and is now offering jobs at other locations to the workers of those stores that will be shutting down. a new year often means new prices for the u.s. postal service. so starting in january, a first class forever stamp will cost you 46 cents. that's up a penny. usps officials also plan to raise the rates for priority mail services. the postal regulatory commission will review the prices before they become

effective on january 27. some people in berkeley mourning the loss of redwood trees cut to make room for a library there. five trees originally cut down for the newest branch library but now a 6th will be cut. it was supposed to be saved but the library says the contractors damaged it when they took the other trees out so it has to go, as well. >> they weren't going to cut it down but now it's like they all are cut. >> devastated by it. it was very sad to watch all the treats be cut down one after the other on a sunny afternoon. >> some young supporters there. the contractor is expected to pay for the damage and a new mature tree will be planted in place of the one that had to come down. some sick animals at the oakland zoo are getting a little extra tlc. >> zoo official opened a new state-of-the-art veterinary hospital. it will help treat over 600

animals and the 96 different species living at the zoo. the facility opened your opinion yesterday and it replaces the older and much smaller clinic. >> we'll work out of a true hospital with a facility that can cover the full spectrum of the type of animals we have, little frogs all the way to zebras to tigers, chimpanzees. it gives us a great sense of confidence that we can provide the quality they deserve. >> the new hospital features the latest technology in veterinarian care and will also be used as a teaching tool. pretty good. time now 4:51. if you have called into work when you weren't sick, you're not the only one. the craziest excuses some people came one. >> plus, man's best friend takes on a whole new meaning. how this dog saved a newborn. >> and it's dinnertime if only these toddlers could stay away. how sleep and spaghetti go hand in hand for these boys.

are on the scene of a two-am house fire... in an area of cambrian park. in san jose, firefighters are on the scene of a two alarm house fire. live pictures from the cambrian park area. the fire department says some explosions could be heard from inside the house which contains apparently live ammunition. the fire on carlson avenue was reported just before 4:00 this morning. no reports of any injuries. but you can see the damage from the fires. flames shooting out of the roof and crews are trying to put that fire out. we'll have an update in a bit. right now, a connecticut family says -- actually no. we're going to weather. >> we are. we wanted to talk about the half moon bay pumpkin festival that's taking place this

weekend if you want to check it out there. go early. it's very crowded to get there. partly cloudy skies. should be about 64 degrees. >> how fun. all right. i know gianna my producer and friend is going to check it out on saturday. so here's a live look at some bridges across the bay area. we have the golden gate, the bay bridge, and the san mateo bridge. and so far, as you can see, it's "friday light" across the bay area. no major hot spots. we do have some overnight roadwork in lanes a few spots still left out there. we'll tell you about that coming up. a connecticut family says their dog helped save the life of their infant daughter. sunday night, duke woke up to his owners with his shaking which they say is odd. the couple knew something was wrong so they checked their 9- year-old daughter and found her not breathing. they called 911 and the paramedics were able to revive the baby. the couple says duke saved the day. >> he is the perfect dog.

he was meant to be ours. tell him all the time were you born in mommy's heart. just because he was so meant to be ours. he's a good boy. >> dogs just know. the family says they wanted to share their story because they're hoping to inspire others to adopt dogs in need like they did. >> they really do know, you know? sixth sense. we have all heard of a food coma when you eat too much and you want to sleep after, right? >> we have all been there but for two little boys they had trouble staying awake during their meal. take a look at this video. it's gone viral. 22-month-old twins just can't keep their eyes open while they are both eating spaghetti. the guy on the right is doing okay. they apparently had a tough morning playing and were tuckered out. i think he is going to get his ear in it here in a minute. >> that's how i feel sometimes after we go get pancakes in the morning. >> this is me driving home each day. i get some of my best sleep on the highway. you know? oh, i'm fine.
